A climbing team discovered human remains that are believed to belong to Andrew Irvine, who went missing while climbing Everest in 1924

When a National Geographic documentary team discovered a boot and sock sticking out of a melting glacier on Mount Everest in September, they almost immediately recognized its significance as a clue to a century-old mystery.

When Sandy Irvine went on a pioneering expedition to Mount Everest’s summit in 1924, he and his partner vanished. The recent discovery may shed light on the ill-fated adventure.

The find comes 25 years after Irvine's climbing partner George Mallory’s frozen body was also discovered on the Himalayan peak.

Last month, a team of climbers filming a National Geographic documentary stumbled on the preserved boot, revealed by melting ice on a glacier. This boot was believed to belong to Andrew Comyn "Sandy" Irvine, who disappeared while attempting to climb Everest in June 1924 with his partner George Mallory.

In his final letter to his wife, Ruth, before he vanished on Mount Everest a century ago, the 37-year-old Mallory, who once famously said he wanted to conquer Everest "because it's there," tried to ease her worries even as he said his chances of reaching the world's highest peak were "50 to 1 against us."
