Met Office weather forecasters have predicted snow could hit the UK in the New Year - but it will follow potentially severe rainfall that looks set to disrupt people's New Year's Eve plans

The Met Office has issued a Yellow snow and ice warning for five areas at the start of the week. It issued a new update at around 11am on Saturday.

After a foggy and damp start to the post-Christmas week, temperatures are expected to plummet, potentially bringing significant snowfall to parts of the UK. Since Boxing Day, mist and fog have lingered across much of the country, with areas such as Gloucestershire, the Midlands and Yorkshire experiencing particularly dense conditions.

By Sunday, the UK is forecast to be brighter, but colder, with blustery showers, followed by rain and hill snow in the north. But from Tuesday, December 31, next week the Met Office has warned Brits to expect an "erratic change" in the weather, that could bring more widespread snow across the UK.
