Providence, Rhode Island, is looking to make history as the first city on the East Coast to ban new gas stations, a move some have said will raise gas prices.

The Providence City Council will soon consider whether to ban development of new gas stations in the Rhode Island capital in favor of pushing drivers toward electric vehicles.

"By becoming one of the first cities on the East Coast to potentially prohibit new gas stations, Providence can lead the way in reducing carbon emissions and promoting cleaner, greener energy alternatives," Goncalves wrote in a statement following the meeting.
