La Nina is part of a natural climate cycle that can cause extreme weather across the planet — and its effects vary from place to place.

Last winter—affected by El Niño—was the warmest on record in the U.S., with temperatures across the lower 48 states measuring 5.4 degrees higher than average, according to NOAA. Several states recorded their warmest winters ever, NOAA said, including North Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, Michigan, New York, Vermont and New Hampshire.

NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center reports there is a 60% chance that a weak La Nina will develop this autumn and could last until March.

A weak La Niña is expected to develop ahead of the season and influence temperatures, precipitation, and by extension, even snow across the United States. La Niña is a natural climate pattern that influences global weather marked by cooler than average ocean temperatures in the equatorial Pacific.
