Accepting the offer is akin to a one-year contract. Should a player reject the offer, their former team will receive a compensatory pick for the upcoming draft. (Current Red Sox top prospect Kristian Campbell, for example, was their compensation for losing Xander Bogaerts.)

Boston will surely target Atlanta Braves starter Max Fried, who's set to hit free agency for the first time in his career, and Red Sox pitcher Lucas Giolito already has a plan to entice the free agent to join him.

The Red Sox need front-line pitching this winter. They may have a recruiting edge when it comes to two of top arms available, too.
