A source confirmed to The Oregonian/OregonLive that Boyer is leaving OSU to become quarterbacks coach at Michigan State for former Beavers coach Jonathan Smith. Boyer was an offensive quality control assistant for six years under Smith at Oregon State. Boyer coached tight ends for one season under current Oregon State coach Trent Bray.

Boyer has been with the Beavers since Smith hired him in 2018 and he spent six seasons as an offensive quality control coach and senior advisor. He was promoted to tight ends coach in December 2023 after Smith left Corvallis to take over the Spartans.
